Attila Orbán int he Olof Palme House on Thursday, 13 September

At this time, int he autumn of 2007, a topical question is posed: „Is modernity our antiquity?” this being one of the principles of Dokumenta 12, an international exhibition of artworks to be concluded in Kassel, Germany, in a few weeks. The works of art by Attila Orbán are worthy to be exhibited int hat city, int he middle of Germany,because involuntarily they answer the above question int he most up-to-date fashion.

It was Classical Avantgarde that incorporated into European artistic consciusness tribal art, regarded as primitive and naive at the time,attaching high importance to masks as a visual element, ceremonial paraphelmalia and objets d’art. It is this image-making tradition that Attila Orbán resumes and reinterprets by directly or symbolically effecting changes to abstracted shapes of the eyes and mouths on masks.It is sacred objects, i. e. those whose history covering far and wide space, as well as a long time can be learnt in the major museums of our planet, that establish a relationship between art, sacredness an d human life on ordinary days. The sacred object has a universal meaning of being hidden.While venturing on Australian soil, Attila Orbán had an opportunity to get in touch with mask- making tribes. It is tobe pointed out, however, that he had had his suply of signs and symbols before that great journey and that he has been furthering his experiences gained in Australia in a personal and uniquemanner since then.

The exhibition, which is on display int he Olof Palme House and whose exhibits belong mostly to a collection of Artchivum, gives viewers an insight into the sacred process of masks transiting from one artistic and sacred state into another.

The exhibition can be viewed at the Olof Palme House , at 1 Olof Palme sétány, in Budapest, from 13to 28 September, 2007. Mouseum hours are 10 a. m. to 6 p. m. daily.

„A modernség a mi antikvitásunk?”aktuális kérdés ez most, 2007 őszén,hiszen  a néhány hét múlva záruló kasseli nemzetközi képzőművészeti seregszemle a dokumenta 12 tárlatának egyik rendezőelve ez. Orbán Attila alkotásai méltán lehetnének ott a közép-német város kiállítótereiben, hiszen akaratlanul is a legkorszerübb választ adják a feltett kérdésre.
A klasszikus avantgard emelte be az európai művészeti köztudatba az akkoriban primitivnek, naivnak nevezett törzsi művészetet, hangsúlyos képi elemként kezelve a szertartási kellékként és egyben műalkotásként is jelenlévő maszkot. E képalkotási hagyományt folytatja, értelmezi újra Orbán Attila munkáiban, amikor direkten, vagy csak éppen jelzésszerűen / szem, száj / az absztrahált arcformát, a maszkot variálja. Művészet szakralitás és hétköznapok között a kultikus tárgy teremt kapcsolatot, olyan tárgy, amelynek térben és időben szerteágazó tőrténetét jól ismerhetjük a világ nagy múzeumaiból. Jelentése pedig egyetemes: rejtőzködés. Orbán Attila közelébe kerülhetett maszk készítő törzseknek, amikor Ausztráliába kapott meghívást, de hangsúlyozni kell,hogy jelkészlete már készen volt a nagy utazás előtt, s azóta is  egyéni módon alakítja tovább ott szerzett tapasztalatait.
A művész Olof Palme Házban rendezett kiállításának anyaga –amely legnagyobb részt az ARTCHIVUM gyüjteményéből származik- betekintést nyújt abba a kultikus folyamatba, amely egy tárgy- jelen estben a maszk-művészi szakrális változásait követi nyomon.
